The Power of Puppetry

Puppetry serves as a unique repository for our interpretation of the human experience. Like music and dance, it is an ancient art ever evolving and renewing itself.

A puppet is an inanimate figure that is caused to move by human effort before an audience. The origins of puppetry are veiled in antiquity, but it is known that primitive peoples made puppets long before the invention of writing. Puppets probably served a function in the ritual magic practiced in pre-historic times. Extensive use of puppetry for both religious and secular purposes is recorded in every subsequent civilization. Whatever the setting, audiences of every culture have always responded wholeheartedly to those qualities unique to the art.

When operated with skill and artistry, puppets can convey with great intensity every emotion known to the human species. Puppets eloquently express the gamut of dramatic styles from slapstick and riotus comedy to heart rending pathos. In our ever evolving multicultural world, puppetry inspires us to celebrate our differences with understanding, humor and compassion. Puppetry is a universal communicator, powerfully distilling the essence of thoughts and feelings common to all humankind.

Our Partnership with Dallas Children's Theater

Since 1996 we have presented original puppet plays as part of DCT's season. In 2003, when Dallas Children's Theater moved into the Rosewood Center for Family Art, we moved in as well. The Rosewood Center now houses our Antique Collection as well as our studio. In addition to presenting two of our original puppet plays per year as part of DCT's Main Stage season, we also collaborate with DCT on their productions in which they feel that puppets will best represent a character or set of characters in a show. Most notable of these collaborations is The Velveteen Rabbit as well as the upcoming Goodnight Moon.
